Alicia Serratos

3 Sisters Seed Box - Founder at 12 years old

Lake Forest, California

Alicia, aged 13, has always had a green thumb and a drive towards sustainability. Having successfully petitioned Girl Scout Cookies to create GMO-free cookies and being the star of the documentary ‘Need to Grow,’ Alicia is no stranger to change-making. When creating Seed Libraries in her community she saw the positive impact they made, inspiring Alicia to take this a step further and to grow her initiative into communities everywhere - namely one in every US State!

Inspiring others to get their hands dirty, Kebloom conducted an interview with Alicia to ask her about her entrepreneurial seed initiative:

1) Please introduce yourself.

Hi, I'm Alicia Serratos I'm 13 years old and I live in Lake Forest, California.

“ My goal is to ship out 100 of these Seed Boxes and get at least one in each of the 50 states!”

2) Tell us a little bit about your initiative?

I started the 3 Sisters Seed Box which is basically a seed library in a box.  My goal is to ship out 100 of these Seed Boxes and get at least one in each of the 50 states.

3)    How did you come up with the name, 3 Sisters Seed Box?

I came up with the name 3 Sisters Seed Box when I was little and I went to a summer camp at the Ecology Center. They told us a story about the Three Sisters Garden and I have two sisters myself so the name seemed like the perfect fit.

“…do something you're passionate about so you can enjoy it and it doesn't feel like work.”

4) What passions inspired your business?

I've been in gardens my whole life and had already started 4 Seed Libraries. I saw the impact that they were making on the community so I decided to share that with the world.

5) Who supports you with your business?

This is a big project. I was lucky enough to have Seed Savers Exchange donate all the seeds for my Seed Boxes, and I met Rob Greenfield a couple weeks later and he committed to helping with the shipping.

6) What is your current goal?

My current goal is to ship out 100 seed boxes and get one (at least) in each of the 50 states.

7) What advice would you give to other young business builders?

My advice for people who want to start a big project is to do something you're passionate about so you can enjoy it and it doesn't feel like work.

…and anything else you’d like to add!

One thing I try to incorporate in all my projects is giving back in some way.
